The Counselling Process


Counselling is a process that promotes personal growth in a supportive environment. The process relies on a collaborative relationship that is warm, genuine, and understanding between you and your therapist. There is an underlying belief that everyone has the capacity for increased awareness, growth and transformation. Every individual already has existing strengths and tools that have helped them cope to this point. Through the process therapists help you identify strengths, develop ways to build on existing strengths, and work towards integrating new tools for approaching old problems in a new way.

The First Session


The first session usually involves a discussion of your current situation to help identify key issues. Once the key issues are identified, additional questions will be asked and may include an inquiry into your current coping skills and attempts to solve the issues on your own. Counselling is a collaborative approach; therefore you and a skilled therapist will decide the direction you take in future sessions. Sometimes issues can be resolved in one session. Work is focused on accomplishing goals and learning skills to create lasting change to reflect your highest values.

Counselling Approach: Personalized


Individual problems and issues can not always be addressed through only one mode of counselling. We use skills, strategies and formats from several different approaches. Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are short term, cost effective and considered evidence based best practices.
